Nero Marquina

A striking black Spanish limestone with bold white veining

Nero Marquina is quarried near Markina-Xemein in the Basque Country of northern Spain. Technically a fine-grained black limestone rather than a metamorphic marble, it has been worked commercially as 'marble' for centuries.
A genuinely deep black base, its colour derived from organic carbon within the ancient seabed sediment, threaded with white calcite veins deposited later along natural fracture lines.

TECHNICAL OPTIONS

FINISHES: Polished
THICKNESS: 20mm, 30mm
SPACES: Bathrooms, Commercial, Kitchen
RESISTANCE: Heat

Nero Marquina forms from black, fossil-rich limestone laid down on an ancient seabed, its dark colour coming from organic carbon mixed into the calcium carbonate as it settled – the same basic process, over a much longer timescale, that gives coal its colour.

Over time, mineral-rich water moving through natural fractures in the rock deposited the bright white calcite veins that give Nero Marquina its striking, graphic contrast – available in varying densities from fine and sparse to bold and heavily veined.

At Landford Stone, we select and supply natural stone like Nero Marquina directly, backed by expert advice on finish, fabrication and long-term care.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Stone to last

a lifetime

As a natural stone, this marble is porous and should be sealed on installation, with re-sealing roughly every 12-18 months to guard against staining. Wipe up spills promptly - acidic liquids such as wine, citrus juice and vinegar can etch and dull the polished surface - and always clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner rather than bleach, ammonia or other acidic or abrasive products. Use a chopping board and trivets to protect against scratches and heat marks. With correct care, marble develops a genuine natural patina and remains a beautiful, long-lasting surface for generations.
