Stone in the Bathroom: Design Inspirations Beyond the Kitchen

Stone gets all the attention in kitchens – granite worktops, marble islands, quartz surfaces everywhere you look.

Meanwhile, bathrooms too often make do with tiles and composite materials, as if stone somehow doesn’t belong there.

This is backwards! Bathrooms are wet rooms. Stone handles water beautifully, cleans without fuss, and creates the kind of spa-like atmosphere that even expensive tiles can’t quite replicate.

If anywhere deserves stone, it’s bathrooms. Here’s how to use it properly.

Stone-clad showers and feature walls

Using large-format slabs for shower cladding and feature walls means fewer joints, less grout maintenance, and a cleaner overall appearance.

Granite and quartz both excel in shower surrounds – granite brings natural variation and warmth, while quartz offers consistency and zero-maintenance performance. Marble can work, but requires more diligent cleaning.

Of course, this is all magnified with walk-in showers, which are gorgeous with natural rock surrounds.

Flooring that feels right underfoot

Limestone, slate, or honed granite underfoot feels outstanding. The thermal mass of stone works incredibly well with underfloor heating, retaining warmth long after you turn the heating off.

Limestone and slate offer good slip resistance. Honed granite also works well, but marble requires treatment.

Combining stone with other materials

Stone pairs easily with timber, tiles, and metals. For your fixtures and fittings:

  • Brushed brass against white marble or grey granite creates warm, luxurious combinations
  • Matte black tapware provides a dramatic contrast with light limestone or quartz
  • Brushed nickel offers subtle, contemporary pairings with most stone colours

Don’t skip lighting either. Under-cabinet lighting beneath vanities creates an ambient glow, while LED strips in shower niches highlight the surround. Ensure that well-placed spotlights emphasise feature walls, bringing out their exquisite depth and texture.

Why stone pays long-term

Stone in bathrooms delivers results that last for decades. Trends come and go, but stone remains elegant forever.

Yes, it costs more upfront. But the initial investment pays dividends across many years. You can update the tapware, change the lighting, swap accessories, and the stone adapts accordingly.
