How To Choose A Worktop That Matches Your Kitchen Cabinets & Flooring

Choosing a stone worktop can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to coordinate it with existing cabinets and flooring.

There are so many variables to consider – colours, patterns, textures – and the worry that you’ll pick something that doesn’t work with everything else.

The good news is that most stones work with most kitchens if you understand a few basic principles.

Read on to choose stone that complements your kitchen and its cabinetry in every respect.

Start with what’s already there

Before you fall in love with any particular slab, take a proper look at your kitchen. We’re talking the flooring, the wall colours, the amount of natural light, even the style of your handles.

Is your kitchen leaning towards traditional or contemporary style? Cosy or spacious? Busy or minimal?

These characteristics can even matter more than whether your cabinets are technically “Shaker” or “handleless” because they determine what stone will feel right in the space.

Colour matching your stone

Stones come in numerous colours, from the warmth of limestone to the sincerity of granite and the luxury of veined marble.

When you’re thinking about colour, think about temperature and undertones. Warm kitchens (think cream cabinets, wooden floors, brass hardware) work well with stones that have warm undertones, even if they’re completely different colours.

Cool kitchens (white cabinets, grey floors, chrome hardware) suit stones with cooler undertones.

Light vs dark: the eternal question

Light cabinets give you options. Go light with the stone, too, and you’ll create a bright, spacious feeling. Go darker and you’ll add drama and visual depth. Both can work brilliantly – it depends on what mood you’re after.

Dark cabinets are often complemented by lighter stones to provide some much-needed contrast, unless you’re specifically going for a dramatic vibe and have plenty of light to carry it off with darker stones too.

Working with your floor

Your floor sets the foundation for everything else. Wooden floors are forgiving – most stones complement wood beautifully. Tiles need more thought because you don’t want your worktop and floor competing for attention.

Existing stone floors are the trickiest. You need stones that acknowledge each other without being identical twins. Think siblings rather than clones.

Pattern and movement considerations

Busy cabinets with lots of detail work best with calmer stone patterns. Let the cabinets be the star. Plain cabinet doors can handle dramatic veining or bold patterns – the stone becomes the focal point.

Kitchen size matters too. Large kitchens can carry dramatic patterns that might overwhelm smaller spaces. If you’re unsure, subtlety usually wins over statement-making.
