A sedimentary rock composed mostly of calcium carbonate, limestone often comes with fossils embedded and, in some cases, has a coarse open texture.

Though available in a range of finishes, limestone is often used in a honed finish (see Finishes) as it generally does not accept or retain a high lustre polish.
